It's not an official part of Sidmouth FolkWeek, but for the past few years there's been an additional series of free gigs called the Fringe Sessions running just along the road at Salcombe Regis beside one of the campsites used by festival regulars.
Set up by music lover Giles Sadler, it's an alternative to the main ticketed evening events with its focus firmly on Devon talent of all vintages, although this time there are bands travelling from Birmingham, Bristol and Penzance to take part.
The latter are none other than rootin' tootin' West Cornwall bluegrass quartet Flats and Sharps (pictured above) who continue to make a name for themselves with their accomplished and slightly tongue in cheek interpretation of the genre. Laden with teen angst and trivia, they cast a footstomping new light on an old tradition.
From North Devon comes modest singer and songwriter Peter Bruntnell (pictured above) whose influence on aspiring artists continues to grow, while he keeps his own music career strictly honest and surprisingly low key. Peter has nine albums to his name, including the recently released Retrospective with guest vocals from the platinum-selling Rumer.
Other established music makers performing are the rootsy, bluesy Andy Grant Trio, Small Town Jones, Mitchell and Vincent, Phil King, Mark Donnelly, The Bonfire Band, husband and wife duo The Crees from Dorchester, and stalwarts The Fallen Apples, from Somerset, who open the Fringe with their energetic mix of bluegrass, blues, roots and stomp to get everyone jigging.
Young, breaking artists on the line-up include duo Six Days – Ollie Harris (17) and sister Ellie (19) from Colyton; Emma Lauran (19) from Exeter who recently left Kings School, Ottery; Adam Sweet (26) from Lyme Regis; Will Lawson (20) from Oxford; Mark Donnelly (26) from Bristol; Cloudi Lewis (19) from Southampton and the hotly tipped Tom James (20) from Falmouth, who was taught finger style guitar by virtuoso Andy McKee.
All the shows are free, although donations for the musicians are welcomed. Visit sidmouthfringe.co.uk. Reported by This is 1 hour ago.
