This is Grimsby --

GET to grips with woodlands and wildlife at a free, hands-on course.

The three-day event takes place in a large and very special North Lincolnshire woodland between August 14 and 16

Normally strictly closed to the public for security reasons, Burkinshaw's Covert at Total UK's Lindsey Oil Refinery at North Killingholme has undergone a comprehensive programme of management for the benefit of its undisturbed wildlife over the past three years, made possible by the help of local volunteers from Humber Conservation Volunteers and from Hull TCV, organised by Humber INCA.

In recent weeks, youngsters from Immingham Oasis Academy have also lent a hand and will continue to help in future.

However, more volunteers would be welcome and, to help to recruit and train them, Humber INCA and HCV are providing the free training to show people how to identify trees and which are the best for wildlife, how a woodland "works" from the canopy to below the ground, what other habitats are important in a woodland other than just trees and why proper management is important.

The course will be practical-based in showing how to fell trees safely, create new wildlife habitats and show how commercial forestry is also important in a green future.

There are opportunities for families with children over the age of 8, as long as they are fully supervised by a parent or guardian.

There is also plenty to do in the future at this site and other conservation projects, including tree planting and hedge laying.

Anyone interested in getting involved can contact Alan at Humber INCA on 01652 631 523or e-mail alan.jones@humberinca .co.uk Reported by This is 3 hours ago.
