According to the Boston Globe, forty eight communities throughout Massachusetts will be receiving thousands of dollars in grant money to increase pedestrian and cyclist safety. Kiley Law Group’s bicycle accident attorneys praise the state’s increased commitment to protecting cyclists and comments on the current state of bicycle transportation throughout Massachusetts.

Massachusetts transportation has been going through a transition for several years. As more people turn to alternative forms of transportation, cyclists and motorists have struggled to adapt to a side-by-side existence. New bicycle lanes near Boston College down to the city line have been implemented, showcasing the state’s forward progress towards change, but things have been moving slowly.

Grants ranging from $3,000 to $7,500 awarded based on need and population were distributed to several communities. Many of the communities are located on popular bicycle routes and the grants are intended to pay for increased police presence at cross walks during popular biking months.

Extra police patrols and officers posing as pedestrians will issue warnings and tickets to drivers who do not wait for people who have been waiting to cross. Laws preventing bicyclists from using sidewalks will also be strictly enforced. Those who violate bicycle laws can be given a ticket and be ordered to pay hundreds of dollars.

Tom Kiley Sr., Massachusetts Bicycle Accident Lawyer, has represented several cyclists who have been seriously injured in collisions with motor vehicles. “Massachusetts has long been a state in need of sweeping changes to help accommodate cyclists, but there has been substantial progress made in recent years. Now with an extensive network of bike paths and lanes it is reassuring to see that we are moving in the right direction, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

“Many motorists are still failing to recognize the presence of cyclists or are using bicycle lanes to decrease their time in traffic. With the number of cyclists currently on the streets throughout Massachusetts using their bikes to get to work, school, or anywhere else, we need statewide cyclist solutions to accommodate them. Until then, these types of grants will have to do,” said Attorney Kiley.
