Strictly for fun - tango teachers bring Buenos Aires magic to Derby

Strictly for fun - tango teachers bring Buenos Aires magic to Derby This is Derbyshire --

WITH Strictly Come Dancing set to return to our TV screens tonight, a Derby dance duo are encouraging people to have a go at the Argentine tango.

Husband and wife Billy and Mel Homan have been dancing and teaching for many years.

And now they are urging people to try the dramatic dance style during their new classes at Déda, in Chapel Street, which start on Monday .

Mrs Homan said: "Most people know it by watching Strictly Come Dancing but should not be put off by how complicated that can seem as a show dance on television.

"It is far simpler to learn than it looks and, in fact, if you can walk – you can do the Argentine tango."

The couple met in Argentina in 2002 when Billy, who is half American and half Argentinian, was visiting family there and Mel, who is from Derby, was travelling as part of a gap year.

Billy stayed to perform and teach tango as part of a performing arts team which took him around the world, while Mel returned home to attend university.

After a long-distance relationship, the couple married in 2007 and settled in Derby where they now have a one-year-old son and both work full time – Billy as a construction project manager and Mel as an occupational therapist.

Mrs Homan, 32, said: "We both love dancing and have been performing and teaching tango for many years, whilst both working in full-time jobs.

"We are delighted to be working with Déda, who are renowned for their high-quality and inclusive dance class programme, and are really looking forward to starting the class and getting involved in all sorts of activities to introduce people to dance.

"Argentine tango is a wonderfully passionate and dramatic dance style, which has its rather scandalous roots in the bars around the Argentinian ports. It's great fun and easy-going, with an emphasis on communication and spontaneity."

The couple will be part of a line-up of specialist teachers who will encourage shoppers at Westfield Derby to have a go on Saturday, September 21.

They will also host a "Strictly" night at Déda on Monday, October 14, when dressed in Argentine tango show outfits.

And they will be leading a Milonga tango dance party at Déda on October 19, following a performance of Tangomotion, which features two world-class tango dancers and the musicians of Tango Siempre, who have appeared on Strictly Come Dancing.

Clare Limb, Déda dance development manager, said: "We are very excited about Billy and Mel joining the teaching team at Déda.

"They are fantastic teachers and will bring the magic of Buenos Aires to Derby to hopefully inspire people of all ages to learn and enjoy this wonderfully evocative style of Latin American dance."

Former Derbyshire Strictly Come Dancing contestants have included ex-South Derbyshire MP Edwina Currie, Holby City actor Tom Chambers and former Rams footballer Robbie Savage.

Edwina admits she had a great time and would recommend it to anybody. She said: "Learning to dance on Strictly was great fun.

"I emerged much fitter and more nimble after the show.

"When you hear the music at the start of the dance it's an awesome feeling.

"As soon as I left I started dance lessons and can now do the quick step.

"I'd say to anybody of any age to give it a go because it's a great way to stay fit."

Strictly Come Dancing – TV review

Deep male cleavage, Brucie's gagstipation – and no real drama. It's business as usual on Strictly

I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control, and I think I like it … Not me, no; I'd say I feel indifferent at best. That's the song – you know, by the Pointer Sisters – the contestants are emerging to at the start of this *Strictly Come Dancing* (BBC1, Saturday) opener. With a lot of pops and flashes and resultant fug. So much fug! Perhaps they're fumigating them, too, on the sly, because there's a Hairy Biker among this year's batch, and no one wants to catch anything off him.

Who else? More of the usual TV folk, mostly. Corrie, Hollyoaks, Casualty, Waterloo Road, Countdown, BBC Breakfast, The Vanessa Show (ha, remember?) all represented. And a lady Dragon, hoping to show a more fun side, she says. It couldn't be a less fun than the one she normally shows, to be honest. Then there's a former Bond girl, a current Wag'n'model, a fashion designer, a hot rugby player, an old golfer and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who's mainly there so Brucie can do a joke about Murder on the Dancefloor, which he duly does.

Brucie's gagstipation is getting worse, I'm afraid; he sweats and strains and pushes for ages and ages until eventually out they come with a little plop and a big sigh. Still, at his age, what do you expect? And they're not written down; I know he's got those cue cards with him, which he glances down at often, but – and I've been told this by an insider – all they've got on them are his own name and the name of the show he's appearing on.

Tess, meanwhile, remains beautiful, blond and bland. There are the same pantomime judges, trying to be nastier than they really are. And there's some fresh, firm-fleshed, deep-cleavaged (the men, mostly) talent in from eastern Europe for Bruce to mispronounce comedically, to keep our slebs literally on their toes, and to keep the totty levels, and resultant viewing figures, topped up. "See, Mr Farage," they mutter through their perfect rictus grins. "We are a good thing for this country, no?" And it's hard to disagree, though there is something a bit seedy about some fat old British geezer getting paired up with a Russian lovely half his age, then leading her upstairs with a big grin on his face. No? Less so when the genders are reversed perhaps. It's Peter Crouch, in the audience, I feel most sorry for, as his missus wraps herself around a prime hunk of Slovenian beef called Aljaz. Robot dance not looking so clever now, is it Pete? It is all about sex really, isn't it, this show? Sex disguised as Saturday-evening family entertainment…

Jessie J, with new hair, sings a song. Rod Stewart, too, with the same hair he's had for ever. Why, on a programme about dancing? I don't know. Actually I do. Because there's 80 minutes of television to fill, and very little to fill it with. No actual drama. Introductions, a new set, Tess's lovely smile, Brucie's groansome little splashes: they are simply not enough. They make a big song and dance of the pairing-offs, who's going to go off and make chachacha with whom – drum rolls, big pauses for extra tension … But for the average viewer, it makes not a jot of difference whether Chalky from Waterloo Road dances with Iveta or Anya; Countdown's Rachel with Artem or Pascha, Mr Kovalovalova here … stop it! I caught it off you, Bruce.

Which makes the whole of this launch show, a couple of weeks before the action proper, a bit of a waste of time. The only fun bit comes right at the very end, with our celebrities' first attempt at a dance. The boys pedal their fists out of sync on the stairs; Lady Dragon wanders around looking lost. I'm out, she's thinking, but there's no pile of cash to hide behind on this show; Ellis-Bextor is lifted in the air, like a caber; Mr MacFashion jumps up and down enthusiastically; Hairy Biker makes like a motorbike in the air, Golfer jabs a finger. And some of them actually look at as if they've done this before. Not Vanessa, though, who is carried around on her back in the air. A bit like a coffin.

And now they all go away again, until 27 September, when they'll have learned to do it better. I'm hoping for more twerking this year, obviously. Mainly from … well, all of them, really. I'll leave you with the image. Reported by guardian.co.uk 20 hours ago.

BBC1 show gets average 8.4 million audience, narrowly ahead of 8.3 million for ITV rival

Strictly Come Dancing beat The X Factor in the television audience ratings when the shows clashed for the first time this year on Saturday. The BBC1 contest drew an average audience of 8.4 million for its first programme, narrowly ahead of the 8.3 million (including viewers of the +1 catch-up channel) who watched the hour-long edition of its ITV rival.

The opening programme – where this year's 15 celebrities were introduced to the public with their professional partners – was up 400,000 on the first show of last year. X Factor had suffered a drop from its first programme of 2013 the previous week, which pulled in 9.2 million. It was also down on the second Saturday of the 2012 series – 400,000 fewer viewers tuned in on Saturday.

Bookies had put Strictly as the favourite to pull in the bigger audience. Charlotte Moore, the controller of BBC1, said she was pleased with the launch figures: "Strictly is back. A brilliant show launched the new series with Sir Bruce, Tess and the judges all on top form." Reported by guardian.co.uk 18 hours ago.

This is Cornwall --

Dragon's Den star Deborah Meaden has been paired up with professional dancer Robin Windsor on this year's Strictly Come Dancing.

It was revealed on Saturday's show that the leisure industry multi-millionaire, will be coupled with Robin.

Last year Robin made the semi-final dancing with Emmerdale star Lisa Riley

With an estimated wealth of about £40 million, Mrs Meaden's appearance may come as a major surprise for many fans, as the show is understood to pay fees of between £25,000 and £75,000 – depending on how long each star remains in the competition.

Somerset-born Mrs Meaden started in business running an amusement arcade owned by her family.

She later moved to manage a Devon holiday park, making millions following a management buy-out and subsequent sale.

The 54-year-old investor and businesswoman, joins glamorous Countdown presenter Rachel Riley, 27, and BBC Breakfast host Susanna Reid, 42, in the new series.

The show has already stepped ahead of equally-popular The X Factor in the ratings.

The BBC1 contest drew an average audience of 8.4 million for its launch programme on Saturday, narrowly ahead of the 8.3 million (including viewers of the +1 catch-up channel) who watched the hour-long edition of its ITV rival. Reported by This is 5 hours ago.

Strictly Come Dancing: Kevin Clifton 'can't wait' to train Susanna Reid This is Grimsby --

WALTHAM dancing star Kevin Clifton said he can't wait to dance with breakfast TV presenter Susanna Reid on Strictly Come Dancing.

Talented Kevin, one of the professional dancers on the BBC show, had a tense time on Saturday night – he was one of the last two to find out who he will be training during the coming weeks.

He showed off his energetic skills in a sparkly black costume and was introduced by host Bruce Forsyth as "the new boy".

Grimsby also got a mention as Bruce said: "And all the way from Grimsby is ... Kevin Clifton!"

Afterwards, he took to Twitter to thank fans for their support.

He said he was "proud" and "can't wait for training".

Kevin's finance Karen Hauer is on the show for the second time and she was paired up with Hairy Biker Dave Myers.

Kevin – the son of world champion Grimsby dancers Keith and Judy Clifton – proposed to Karen during a performance of Burn The Floor, at the Shaftesbury Theatre, in London, in April.

He previously told the Telegraph: "As I dance I bring energy and passion.

"I give 110 per cent all the time and I think it's going to be extremely challenging bringing someone into dancing on national television – I'm really up for it!"

He has previously worked on the programme as an assistant choreographer, and watched Karen compete last year with Westlife singer Nicky Byrne, making it to week ten.

TV presenter Susanna said she has got a lot to live up to, as others in her profession have had a good track record on Strictly.

She said: "BBC presenters have a great history on Strictly such as Bill Turnbull and Chris Hollins, who has won the show – so no pressure then!

"I am a mum of three, so I don't know how I am going to fit Strictly in; I might have to dance in the kitchen!"

Kevin danced with all the other professionals to the song I'm So Excited. As part of the routine, he picked up show presenter Cat Deeley with the other male dancers.

He also got to rub shoulders with celebrities such as model Abby Clancy and singer Sophie Ellis- Bextor.

Karen was also left to the final few to find out her partner, and she was overjoyed to find out it was cooking show host Dave.

He said: "I want to do really well, but I need to get my feet in co-ordination with my brain!"

The show ended with a routine to This Is It.

It will be back on our screens in three weeks' time to give Kevin and Karen the chance to rehearse with the celebrities. Reported by This is 2 hours ago.
